“All this she must possess,” added Darcy, “and to all this she must yet add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading.”
(“Pride and prejudice”, Chapter 8)
Miss Elizabeth. I have struggled in vain and I can bear it no longer. These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosings with the single object of seeing you… I had to see you. I have fought against my better judgment, my family’s expectations, the inferiority of your birth by rank and circumstance. All these things I am willing to put aside and ask you to end my agony.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries character tropes (inspired by this):
problems critical side of the fandom has with the positive side - which for laziness reasons we will call ‘candor’ and ‘amity’ for now - and a few whatnots that i’ve noticed:
- amity tends to condescend to candor in the sense that amity stating candor is stating its opinions for the sake of being mean, that amity thinks it’s feeling to entitled, or whatever else. it’s not. candor states opinions because it cares for the show as much as amity does. the principle behind it is that when you love something, you acknowledge the flaws of the object of your affections and wish for them to blossom from they’re problematic nature. it’s not to change who they are but a matter of allowing them to become a better version of themselves. also, candor isn’t being stupid or whiny. they’re just exercising their right to freedom of speech, particularly when it involves something they truly care about.
- members of amity have given members of candor death threats and hate mail. telling them to just stop watching just because they don’t like what’s happening does not help either. (i personally will but there are those who still have hope for reform.) it is not something candor is willing to just look past because again, it is something candor cares about. this is why candor’s part of the fandom in the first place. they’re passionate about it.
- both amity and candor are allowed to their individual opinions, but do not pacify them because of it and instead have proper discourse. do not label. i personally hate generlizations since they just cause messes.
Look, to be honest I just don't get what's the fuss all about. Do you have any texts/links that might help me about that hangout, and all of this stuff? Sorry if I'm bothering you.
You’re not bothering me. I am glad you are trying to educate yourself. That’s cool. This situation has got too complex, but I’ll leave what I believe are the basic links for you to think critically and judge for yourself:
Here is the document with the compilation of the EA criticism (and other aspects) coming from one part of the fandom.
Here is the “positive and open letter to Bernie Su and Pemberley Digital” from another part of the fandom that supports EA.
Here is Bernie’s doc that tries to address some of the criticism.
Also, just saying if you think that casting diversely means casting bad actors, are you trying to tell me that all actors who are people of colour are terrible and the “best person for the job” is almost always a thin white person? Because that’s what it sounds like.
I refuse to be shut up by certain hypocritical people who claim to hate snarkiness and negativity but then all their comments are dripping with heavy sarcasm and condescension. I am not a child to be talked down to. That’s all I have to say.
